Desolation Canyon

The stars alligned in the least convenient way to allow me to go on a five day river trip last week. I won't get into the disadventageous allignment of the stars now, but if you have talked to me recently you will understand.

My good friend Karen has been a river guide for the same company I worked for, for 11 seasons. Out on the river, there are few people who radiate as much competence as she does. I am always thrilled to do trips with her in hopes that I will absorb some of the excess skill, and because sheis fun, fun, fun.

The trip she invited me on was a comercial trip for WWRE with two passengers (a very small trip, usually requiring only one guide) and three younger guides who were just coming along for the ride.

To be fair I had better include an ugly picture of myself...

So I made the four hour drive down to Moab alone, listening to the book Snow Falling on Cedars and nearly falling asleep. Upon arrival in Moab, I tossed my things in the truck and we took off for another four or five hour drive, about half of which was backtracking the section of highway I had just driven. Good day.

Sand Wash is the name of the place boaters begin their journey down Desolation Canyon, it is also the place where the majority of Utah's mosquitos gather to feast on the flesh of any boater foolish enough to think that rain gear should not be worn in 90 degree weather. After rigging the boats, we decided to head up to the plateau to escape the mosquitos. There were fewer up there, but still, no one slept all that well.

The first day we rowed thirty miles of flat water and camped at Jack Creek, where the mosquitos often magically disappear. Not this time.

After dinner we successfully avoided them by playing hacky in rain gear for about an hour. We were all pathetic at it (except Mike) which made it pretty hilarious.

Now it is July 26, and I don't think I am going to finish this post; so I will just publish what I have written and be done with it. Here are a few more pictures from the trip:

One of the passengers was a personal trainer. She led us in morning exercises several mornings.

Looks like an interesting trip. I especially like the photos of the exercise routines.
