Spring Fever

Three cheers for early daylight savings! These pictures were taken between 6 and 7pm, yes that is pm (at 7 am Asher had only been asleep for a few hours, soo..). And wow, I really love where I live. I know there is wonder to be found everywhere you go, but I just don't have to look very hard up here. I have decided to always live where there are acres and acres of open, undeveloped land. That is a non-negotiable.

My car broke down last week and it is now parked in my parents' driveway and probably will be for a while. Of course that is annoying and inconvenient, but at the same time it is, I think, a good thing for me. I have wanted to stop using my car so much for a while, but my lazy side is somehow so much stronger than my idealistic side most of the time. I complain about how disgusting the air is and yet I have done almost nothing about it since Asher was born. I guess I feel like being a mother is so difficult, any one who holds the title should be exempt from any sacrifice for the good of the earth (at least the hard ones). Well, luckily for me my car broke down, so I now have a chance to ride my bike around town pulling Asher in a trailer that is actually worth more than my car. It is too bad it took a catastrophe to get me to do what will make me feel better about myself.
On Saturday night I went to hear writer Bill Mckibben speak about environmental activism. He mainly spoke about a goal he is trying to spread across the US and ultimately the world. This year NASA scientist Jim Hansen said we needed to lower the ppm of carbon dioxide in our air from its current level 375, to 350 in order to maintain life as we know it on this planet. So Mckibben is trying to get people all over to demonstrate their solidarity in achieving this goal on Earth Day this year by doing something that has to do with the number 350. You can go to his site at 350.com to find out more about it and to find out how you can be a part of it. Another site I like is this one: http://www.stopglobalwarming.org/sgw_actionitems.asp which tells you simple steps you can take to reduce your carbon footprint.
Last week I also cut of nearly all of my hair. I'm serious, it is SHORT. Sorry no pictures today. I am just trying to build anticipation.

I hear you about the lazy side winning out. I mean to ride my bike to work, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. When I drive, it will only take me about 15 minutes to get there, but riding my bike takes an hour. But we have to change. Our version of "normal" is so skewed (I just saw a report that stated that America uses four times more oil than any other country, including China, which has more than quadruple our population).

Anyway, I applaud your bike riding, and your willingness to speak up about it.
